The Hippie Modernism book rekindled my interest in the lighter weights of Cooper, and the stunning work Yuma Naito created around the Afropunk festival for a student project sent it through the roof [22]. Natio pairs Cooper with APF Display, a condensed and chamfered custom face, which is a stark contrast to the bulbous and airy forms of Cooper. Courier serves as the body copy and works well against Cooper in the same way Pica 10 Pitch does.
This quirk allows Cooper to play very well with monospace fonts. I love this project and wish I could fit more examples of the work in this review. This design is using an altered version of Cooper Black, likely done by a letterer, that has longer and more aggressive serifs. Typeface, imagery and composition combine to create an iconic design. Your mileage will vary with setting Cooper Black in all-caps.
Cooper Black was clearly meant to be set in uppers and lowers, but you can make it work in all-caps depending on the situation. Alvin Diec also plays against the ubiquity of Cooper Black in mass produced clothing items by using it in all-caps, tracking it out and embracing its slightly off-kilter presentation [28]. A typeface that typically thrives on the interplay between its bulbous shapes is spread out in an unnatural way to purposefully make it feel clumsy.
Your computer likely has a version of Cooper Black already installed, and that version should be all you need. Cooper Black is what it is and the biggest obstacle in using it is deciding if you can mold it to complement your message. It has a strong presence but the diversity in the applications it has seen over the past century speak to its adaptability as well.

A strong grotesk superfamily with weights ranging from Thin to Heavy and widths from UltraCompressed to UltraExpanded. A typeface family designed by Frederic Goudy in The serifs are less blurred. The M is wider than in Cooper. Q has the Goudy tail. The e has an oblique stroke to the eye; in the b the upright tapers to a point below the line. There is no italic. Ludlow Black, , is a similar design and weight.
The e is as in Cooper Black, but the w has no middle serif. Intertype Rugged Black, , is again similar, but more condensed. Mac McGrew: Goudy Heavyface and Italic were designed by Goudy in in response to a strong request by Monotype for a distinctive typeface on the order of the very popular foundry Cooper Black. Such typefaces had little appeal for Goudy, and he always felt that Monotype was disappointed in his efforts, but the result is more informal than other similar types, and has had considerable popularity.
Note the extra set of figures and the unusual number of tied characters and ornaments in the font. In that genre of round-and-fat, Cooper Black is, in my view, superior and certainly more vintage and daring, than Goudy Heavy Face.

Does Ruffa imply that Cooper Black took his ideas from a much earlier wood type? Hamilton Holly Wood Type Co. Founded by Edward J. Hamilton as the J. Hamilton Hollywood Type Company after the introduction in of Hollywood type. In , they published a specimen book of all the wood-type designs in their possession, and, incredibly, destroyed all the original paper designs and patterns for the individual letters. This brought a heavy blow to the wood type industry.
