Bells palsy how does it start

Living with Bell's palsy can make you feel depressed, stressed or anxious. Speak to a GP if it's affecting your mental health. Because it's probably caused by an infection, Bell's palsy cannot usually be prevented. It may be linked to the herpes virus. You'll usually only get Bell's palsy once, but it can sometimes come back. This is more likely if you have a family history of the condition. The facial nerve services the muscles of the face, the ear, salivary and tear glands, and provides some of the sensations of taste on the tongue. This nerve enters the skull via a small opening in the petrous temporal bone at the base of the skull.

In Bell's palsy, the facial nerve swells and the resulting inflammation disrupts the relay of nervous system messages. The paralysis can be partial or total. Request an Appointment at Mayo Clinic.
