The show may have not had the biggest budget going, but fight scenes like this are Chuck at its action-filled best. Throughout the earlier seasons, Chuck fought an ongoing battle to hide his spy life from his friends and family. Among those he found it hardest to keep his secret from was Morgan. They share pretty much everything. So when they face an impending death, Chuck finally reveals his secret.
Does Morgan react with anger at the news? Chuck finally gets the monkey off his back, and one of his nearest and dearest is finally in on his secret. Chuck is momentarily stunned into silence with relief before spilling the beans. Chuck made a thing of using guest stars from TV and film franchises, to varying effect. His motivation for bringing out The Ring is driven by his need to avenge his wife Evelyn, apparently murdered by a Ring operative. He aligns himself with The Ring, abducts and drugs Sarah, and takes her to the place where she shot Evelyn.
Consumed by his grief, Shaw informs a paralysed Sarah of his intention to kill her. The use of flashbacks here is brilliant, as is the accompanying music. The soft piano and ghostly vocals of Kettering by The Antlers offers the moment a haunting quality. A spy who detests guns, Chuck finally pulls the trigger on Shaw when left with no other choice.
The implications for Chuck, who knows that Sarah loves him for his pacifism, are thrown to one side as he saves her life and his own by shooting Shaw. It makes the moment all the more tragic.
Daniel Shaw, a noble agent fallen from grace, driven by his crippling grief. Wonderfully acted by Levi, Bakula, and Sarah Lancaster, it is a tragic scene that proves the show had the capability to carry off heavy drama alongside the secret agent hi-jinx and laughter.
Writing about this moment, I had not realised quite how little I have mentioned Casey in this article. Appalling really, considering his contribution to the show. The result? Casey is under the influence of paralysis-inducing drugs as part of a mission.
Upon medical advice from Captain Awesome, Morgan has to anger or surprise Casey to get him out of his paralysed state. For me though, there is only one choice: Timothy Dalton. Throughout the fourth series he starred as Alexei Volkoff, international arms dealer and the head of criminal organisation, Volkoff Industries. Later on in the series we find out that Volkoff is in fact Harvey Winterbottom, a mild-mannered colleague of Stephen Bartowski whose mind was corrupted by a flawed Intersect upload.
After a scintillating verbal sparring match, Chuck tricks Volkoff into speaking the words that give access to Hydra. The scene is a wonderful culmination of a long-running arc, performed by two supremely talented actors. Two moments from the same episode, I hear you cry? Throughout the fourth series, Chuck has been trying to find the perfect way to propose to Sarah. He finds it in one of the most unexpected places.
I'm really happy now that we're getting a final farewell, so I'm not going to cry at all. I mean it was real depression around that set, real mourning and it wasn't the loss of a job because everyone knew that this was over.
Everyone was grateful that we had 13 episodes and we were all going to go work again on other stuff, but it was just the loss of being around each other—the cast and the crew and the special thing that we had.
It's like I think that feeling that the fans have, that mourning that they'll have when the show goes away on Friday night. We really experienced that with them like telepathically on the set. So it wasn't just us saying goodbye to each other. It was us saying goodbye to our fans and everything and just all these emotions were so overwhelming.
We could barely get through our scenes. Did you take anything home with you on the last day, like Awesome's workout clothes or possibly the Adam leaf? I should have. I'll regret not taking one.
I just took the top of my director's chair, the name that said "Awesome" on the back. Really I'm not one that's sentimental for souvenirs. I wish I was because I know later in life I'll want to open a bar in Chicago and have "Chuck" memorabilia around, but I will just have to track it down at that point I guess from Warner Bros. What would you call your bar? What would I name my Chicago bar?
You know what, I'd try and not be too cheesy with the Awesome stuff because everyone else is, so I would probably have to do something a little more obscure like Woodcombs or Woody's … I don't know. That's a tough one. It would have to be something that only diehard fans would recognize, so maybe I'd even put it up for a vote, like what should I name my bar in Chicago and find out what the most hardcore, diehard fans would want and serve Subway sandwiches out of it.
He attempted to outsource some of his responsibilities to Chuck by asking him to find a band. Jeff and Lester offered their services, and after their audition failed when Lester chickened out, Jeff convinced him to give them a second chance.
Although Jeffster! In Chuck Versus the Broken Heart , Chuck and the male Buy More employees kidnapped Devon for a bachelor party, though Chuck only participated because he thought it might be a easy way to appropriate Devon's hospital access card for a mission.
Devon seemed pleased with their efforts, calling it "awesome," and explained to Ellie that Chuck and the boys kidnapped him into participation. He reaffirmed his love for Ellie during the bachelor party, declining to compromise his relationship with inappropriate behavior, even though Agent Alex Forrest , posing as a stripper, lured him into the home theater room where she attempted to remove the access card from him under the guise of a strip-search.
When he refused, she tranquilized him. While in a state of momentary confusion before passing out, he overheard Chuck talk of the CIA. These glimpses did not seem to have a lasting impression, however. Ellie later saw some photos taken of him with Agent Forrest from the bachelor party, which bruised Ellie and Awesome's relationship. He felt thoroughly ashamed that he may have stumbled, though he could remember nothing and Chuck assured Ellie that nothing had happened.
He learns of John Casey's extensive surveillance of Chuck, and uses keys from his locker to enter Casey's apartment. While attempting to access his computer, he initiates a lock down, with metal bars blocking the windows and doors of the apartment. When Casey releases him, a major confrontation ensues between Devon and Casey, with Casey pulling a gun. Devon attacks him with a bust of President Reagan and delivers a decent right hook. Casey shakes it off, with the comment, "Not bad for a frat boy.
Chuck and Sarah then arrive and take down Casey. Chuck sees no other option than to admit to Devon that he is a high level CIA asset and Casey and Sarah are his handlers, telling Sarah, "He can handle it. I need you to cover for me with Ellie. I need you Can you be awesome? I knew you weren't just a loser who worked at the Buy More! He becomes the first of Chuck's secret keepers. Devon and Ellie married in Chuck Versus the Ring.
He allows Morgan to stall the first ceremony at the church when he was told the order came from Chuck. He realizes something is wrong when Chuck and Sarah are not where to be seen. When the church ceremony ends in inevitable disaster, a second ceremony took place later on the beach, arranged and paid for by Chuck. In season three, in Chuck Versus El Angel de la Muerte , Chuck is forced to allow Devon to come with him on a mission after the doctor turns out to be the one who treats the visiting premier, Alejandro Goya whom Team Bartowski are supposed to be protecting.
Chuck debriefs Devon on the premiers condition and discovers a case of probably poison rather than natural causes. Goya, after learning who saved his life, invites Devon, Ellie, Chuck, and Sarah to his embassy, where Chuck tries to save the dictator from an assassin and bags a political protestor, leading to his removal from the consulate.
Devon, knowing Goya is a target, then spots a furtive man approaching and tackles him. Unfortunately the man was Casey who then disappears into the bowels of the consulate, leaving Devon feeling guilty even as he is praised by Goya. When another attempt on Goya is made by the assassin, the premier specifically asks for Devon to come save his life.
Devon goes to Chuck with a way of getting him into the embassy so he can save Casey. The three make it through the gates and Devon goes to work on the premier while Chuck and Sarah go save Casey. He manages to save the dictator's life again, in large part by giving the dictator a blood transfusion from Casey.
Afterwards, Devon confesses that he doesn't like having to lie and he want to distance himself from Chuck's secret life. Chuck Versus the Angel of Death ends with Devon treating the Goya's assassin, who comes at him with a syringe. His fate remains unknown until the following episode, Chuck Versus Operation Awesome , when it is shown that he was, in fact, captured by the Ring who mistook him for the CIA operative they knew was in the area, and sought to recruit him.
Under Chuck's guidance, Devon infiltrates Shaw's base and stages the murder to the satisfaction of Ring agent, Sydney Prince. With the death of Prince at episode's end, Chuck tells Devon that the threat to him was over, much to his relief.
In Chuck Versus the Beard , Devon is so keyed up by being a secret keeper, he decides he and Ellie have to take a vacation, and head to Malibu, when Chuck desperately needs someone to talk to, he calls Devon who for the first time is less than helpful, "Chuck, I went on vacation to get away from your spy life.
Devon has a freak out, and the calm he had been working to restore is shattered.
