Compatibilism again Canadian Journal of Philosophy 4 3 : Lately, the attitude of philosophers generally toward the free will issue has taken what I regard as an inauspicious turn. Where the predominant opinion had been that determinism and freedom were at harmony with one another, today it is incompatibilism which seems to prevail, and new voices raised in defense of libertarianism now offer their promise that problems once thought prohibitive to an acceptance of contra-causal freedom might be surmounted.

I shall attempt to show that this recent rejec… Read more Lately, the attitude of philosophers generally toward the free will issue has taken what I regard as an inauspicious turn.

I shall attempt to show that this recent rejection of compatibilism in fact rests on a mistake, and I shall suggest the outline of a solution to the free will issue which reconciles determinism and freedom. We shall say that an event is nomologically necessary if and only if given a specified set of conditions and the actually existing laws of nature, the statement of that event could in principle be deduced as the conclusion of a valid deductive argument having the statement of initial conditions and the statement of the relevant law as premises.

Theory appraisal in neoclassical economics Journal of Economic Methodology 4 2 : I should have said that economists are mistaken in their methods of assessment because they focus on the wrong data and because they unjustifiably insist that only unified theories with wide scope need be considered.

Debate: To nudge or not to nudge with Brynn Welch. Journal of Political Philosophy 18 1 : Political Ethics. Revealed preference, belief, and game theory Economics and Philosophy 16 1 : Defenders of the theory of revealed preference have misinterpreted legitimate concerns about the testability of economics as the demand that economists eschew reference to unobservable subjective states.

As attempts to apply revealed-preference theory to game theory illustrate with particular vividness, this demand is mistaken. Capital, Profits, and Prices Journal of Philosophy 80 12 : This paper sketches the contemporary turn in philosophy of science and discusses its practical implications for doing philosophy of economics. This turn consists basically of regarding philosophy of science as itself an empirical social science. It thus embodies a naturalized epistemology.

Some of the circularities inherent in such an epistemology are examined, and it is argued that they are not vicious. Although an empirical approach to the philosophy of science is defended, it is pointed out that there are practical difficulties employing it when studying a discipline like economics in which dispute and controversy are so pervasive.

It is argued that the implications of the empirical approach to philosophy of science for day-to-day philosophical practice are undramatic. Issues in the Philosophy of Economics. Rational belief and social interaction Behavioral and Brain Sciences 26 2 : Game theory poses problems for modeling rational belief, but it does not need a new theory of rationality. Experimental results that suggest otherwise often reveal difficulties in testing game theory, rather than mistakes or paradoxes.

Even though the puzzles Colman discusses show no inadequacy in the standard theory of rationality, they show that improved models of belief are needed. Causation, agency, and independence Philosophy of Science 64 4 : This paper explores versions of agency or manipulability theories of causation and argues that they are unacceptable both for the well-known reasons of their anthropomorphism, limited scope, and circularity and because they are subsumed by an alternative "independence" theory of causation, which is free of these difficulties.

Why don't effects explain their causes? Synthese 94 2. Paradox postponed Journal of Economic Methodology 20 3. This comment argues that there is an explanation paradox in economics, as Julian Reiss maintains, only if models in economics succeed in explaining even though they are not approximately true, fail to identify the causes of what they purport to explain, and misdescribe the mechanism by which the causes lead to the effects to be explained.

Reiss provides no reason to believe that models that do not describe the causes and mechanisms at work are nevertheless explanatory. Models in Economics Idealization in Economics. Fairness and social norms Philosophy of Science 75 5 : This essay comments on the theory of social norms developed by Cristina Bicchieri in The Grammar of Society. It applauds her theory of norms but argues that it cannot account for the experimental results concerning ultimatum games. A theory of fairness is also needed. It develops a number of specific criticisms of her way of incorporating the influence of norms into preferences. White Hall, N. Translate to english.
