Should i use a magnetic drain plug

Using one in your engine will have a slimy fuzz of material on it when you pull it out at your next oil change. The crud collects normal wear particles shed off stuff like your primary gear, transmission gears, and piston rings. The real question is whether getting this gunk out of your oil even matters and if you need a magnet to do it.

On the other hand, your engine does have a filter, and it happens to be very efficient at removing harmful particulates from the lube. Now your average oil filter is going to remove anything larger than 35 microns a micron is one-millionth of a meter, so 35 microns is pretty damn small.

And you know how magnets only work on ferromagnetic metals like iron, cobalt, and nickel? But what about the particles that are smaller than 35 microns? But the real question is: Will they do anything that allows the oil and filter change interval to be extended?

Also, are there any possible adverse effects…such as a clump of ferrous shavings falling off the magnet when you hit a big bump and that clump then running through your engine, or the oil pan being magnetized? They will hold small particles of steel, but not aluminum. The oil filter is effective at keeping these small particles from circulating through your engine, so a magnetic drain plug is not necessary.

If they were useful all new cars would have them installed at the factory. One company does have them but not in a size to fit my Honda CB Best I can tell it is a On modern forced-lubrication motors the oil is pumped through a filter that removes particles as small as 25 microns.

For reference, a human hair is about 50 microns in diameter. The filter scrubs the hard ferrous stuff a magnet would pick up as well as softer non-ferrous debris like aluminum, clutch-plate fibers, bits of carbon and other crud. My KTM Adventure came standard with two magnetic and gauzed oil drain plugs, forward crankcase and rear gearbox. My SA S is identically equipped.
